Electric Carts for Horse Barns: Hay, Feed, and Muck

Barn chores are a weight problem before they're anything else. Hay comes in 40 to 140 pound bales. Feed comes in 50 pound bags. A single stalled horse produces 60 to 70 pounds of manure and soiled bedding every day. Water weighs 8.3 pounds a gallon and a horse drinks 10 to 15 gallons of it daily. Most barns move all of that with a one-wheel barrow and a strong back.

This guide puts real numbers on what a horse barn hauls in a day, where the wheelbarrow and the pickup each fall short, and what a 1,000 lb electric micro-truck changes about the routine.

What a barn actually hauls, by the pound

Hay. A two-string square bale of grass hay runs 40 to 60 pounds; alfalfa at the same size runs 60 to 75 because it's denser. Three-string bales run 90 to 140 pounds. If you feed roughly 20 pounds of hay per horse per day, a four-horse barn goes through 80 pounds daily - about ten two-string bales a week.

Feed. Bagged feed is standardized at 50 pounds. A month of concentrate for a small barn is easily 300 to 400 pounds of bags moving from truck bed to feed room.

Bedding. Compressed shavings bags weigh roughly 28 to 40 pounds each and expand to 6 to 9 cubic feet. A stalled horse uses 8 to 15 pounds of bedding a day, so bags move constantly.

Muck. A 1,000 pound horse produces about 50 pounds of raw waste daily. Add the soiled bedding that comes out with it and total stall waste averages 60 to 70 pounds per horse per day - 2 to 3 cubic feet of it, roughly 12 tons a year per horse.

Water. 8.3 pounds per gallon. A filled 5-gallon bucket is 42 pounds. A 100-gallon trough holds 830 pounds of water.

Add it up for a ten-stall boarding barn: 600 to 700 pounds of stall waste every single morning, plus hay, feed, bedding, and water on their own schedules.

Where the wheelbarrow stops

A contractor wheelbarrow holds about 6 cubic feet and is rated around 400 pounds, but 200 to 300 pounds is the practical ceiling once you're balancing it on one wheel over door sills, mats, and mud. Run the muck math: ten stalls at 60 to 70 pounds each is eight to ten loaded barrow trips to the pile, every day, before breakfast. Hay day is worse - a barrow carries one or two bales at a time, and a three-string bale fills it completely. None of it tips into a trailer or truck bed without a second lift.

Why the truck stays out of the barn

Standard barn aisles run 10 to 12 feet wide, with 12 feet the common recommendation. A full-size pickup fits down the widest of them on paper and almost never belongs there in practice: exhaust in an enclosed building, an engine loud enough to spook horses, and tires that rut the paddock the moment the ground is soft. Tractors have the same problems plus a loader that swings.

So the truck stays at the hay shed and the gate, and everything covers the last two hundred feet by hand. That last two hundred feet is the job.

What a 1,000 lb electric micro-truck changes

Hay and feed day

Six two-string bales strapped on the bed is 250 to 350 pounds - a third of the payload rating. Even six three-string bales, 550 to 800 pounds, stays inside it. A month of feed (eight 50-pound bags) rides in one trip from the truck to the feed room door.

Mucking

The whole reason the numbers above matter: a ten-stall barn's 600 to 700 pounds of daily stall waste is one load with the side rails up, driven to the pile, instead of eight to ten barrow runs. Muck straight from the stall fork into the bed as you work down the aisle.

Water, shavings, and everything else

Ten bags of shavings (300 to 400 pounds) in a trip. Trough top-offs by barrel or caged tank instead of the 42-pound bucket carry - 50 gallons of water is 415 pounds, still half the rated payload. Fence posts, a roll of wire, the farrier's anvil box: if it's under half a ton, it rides.

A barn morning, load by load

Feed first: the day's hay and grain down the aisle in one pass, walk-behind, dropping flakes stall by stall. Turnout, then mucking: work down the aisle, fork straight into the bed, one drive to the pile, tip it with the fork, done. Mid-morning the shavings delivery gets ferried from the driveway to the bedding stall in two loads. After lunch, water barrels out to the far paddock trough. The machine goes back on the charger at dusk with range to spare.

Fit checklist before you buy

  1. Measure your narrowest opening - stall doors, the feed room, the people-gate to the paddock. We recommend a minimum of 33 inches of clearance.
  2. Walk the aisle. 10 feet or wider and you have working room; tighter than that, plan on walk-behind mode for close maneuvering.
  3. Confirm a 110V outlet near where the machine will park.
  4. Walk the muck route. Note the steepest grade to the pile; up to 30 degrees is within spec.
  5. Check ground conditions. For soft paddock mud, ask about tire options when you order.
