Will It Fit? Gate, Trail, and Truck-Bed Planning at 31 Inches Wide
Most of the questions that come in before an order aren't about payload or range. They're about a gap — a garden gate, a shed door, the breezeway between a barn and a paddock. An electric micro-truck earns its keep by going where a pickup can't, and "can't go" is almost always a measurement problem. So here are the numbers, and the arithmetic to do with them.
Start with one number: 31 inches
The StepRanger All-Terrain is 31 inches wide on stock tires. Every fit question downstream starts there.
Our standing recommendation is to plan for a minimum of 33 inches of clear opening — the machine plus a working margin for a hand on the bar and a load that isn't perfectly centered. Measure the narrowest point of the actual gap, not the label on the thing that makes it.
The rest of the envelope:
- Frame: 65" long × 31" wide, measured with the operator step folded up
- Bed: 59" long × 31" wide, with removable side rails
- Height: 54" to the top of the headlight, 51" at the handlebar
- Weight: about 330 lb
- Ground clearance: roughly 10" under the battery box, 8" at the axle
- Wheelbase: about 48.5"; ground-contact footprint about 48"
- Inside wheel to inside wheel: 24"
- Turning radius: about 11 ft, outside to outside
- Max climb: 30 degrees, about a 58 percent grade
Gates and fences
A pedestrian garden gate in the US is typically built at 32 to 36 inches wide. Gates meant to pass equipment — a loaded wheelbarrow, a garden cart, a wide-deck mower — are commonly 42 to 48 inches.
The trap is that a gate leaf is not a gate opening. A 36-inch leaf hung in a frame gives up width to hinge hardware, the latch post, and any sag it has picked up over a few seasons. So open the gate all the way, put a tape across the narrowest point of the passage, and compare it to 33 inches. At 34 or more you have real margin. At 32, widen the gate or plan another route.
One more number for anyone working in rows: inside wheel to inside wheel is 24 inches. It won't straddle a 30-inch raised bed with a wheel in each path — that needs three more inches per side. Run alongside beds rather than over them.
Doors, sheds, and barns
A standard 36-inch exterior door yields roughly 33 to 34 inches of clear passage once it's hung in a frame — right at our 33-inch minimum. It can be done carefully, on a straight approach, with nothing in the bed, but we don't recommend it as a daily route and we won't tell you the machine is designed for it. A standard interior door is a 30- to 32-inch slab, or about 28 to 30 inches of clear width; the All-Terrain does not pass through one.
Outbuildings are usually fine: single barn-style doors run to about 48 inches and a typical shed door is around 6 feet wide. Horse barns are the easiest case — stall doors are standardly 4 feet and aisles run 10 to 12, so width is never the constraint there (electric carts for horse barns).
Greenhouses are the tight case. Center aisles typically run 3 to 4 feet and service aisles 24 to 36 inches, so the 31-inch stock width works down the center and fails in a narrow service aisle. Details and the tire trade-off are in the nursery and greenhouse hauler guide.
Trails and paths
True single-track — the 12- to 30-inch tread most bike and hiking trails are cut to — is too narrow. The useful benchmark is the federal accessible-trail standard: a clear tread width of 36 inches, reduced to 32 only where conditions prevent the full width. A trail cut to that standard carries an All-Terrain. A footpath worn in by boots usually doesn't.
Three other trail constraints:
- Overhead. The handlebar sits at 51 inches, the headlight at 54. Trail-clearing practice aims for roughly 10 feet overhead, so branches are rarely the problem on a maintained trail — a low arbor or shed lintel can be.
- Underneath. Roughly 8 inches at the axle. Water bars, exposed roots, and hardened rut edges catch a low machine long before width does.
- Corners. An 11-foot turning radius means tight switchbacks need a back-and-fill, not a single sweep.
Grades are usually the least of it — 30 degrees, about 58 percent, in Low gear with weight in the front. If you're still choosing between machine classes for real terrain, the 5-acre hauler comparison works through it.
Truck beds, trailers, and hitch carriers
The other half of "will it fit" is transport.
Bed width and length
Width is the easy part. Between the wheel wells, full-size pickup beds generally run 50 to 52 inches and midsize beds 42 to 44, so at 31 inches the All-Terrain sits between the wells of either with room to strap down.
Length is the real constraint. The machine is 65 inches long with the step folded, and the rear tire is the rearmost point — figure about 66 inches. A 5.5-foot short bed measures roughly 67 inches, so it fits with an empty bed and nothing to spare. A 6.5-foot bed (about 78 inches) or an 8-foot bed gives you working room and lets you close the tailgate over it.
The ramp math
At about 330 pounds this is not a lift-it-in machine. You drive it up a ramp under its own power, in Low gear. Standard guidance for low-clearance equipment is 15 degrees or less, and ramp length equals rise divided by the sine of the angle. Against a typical 34-inch bed-floor height:
- 8-foot ramp: about 20 degrees — steep
- 10-foot ramp: about 16.5 degrees — workable
- 12-foot ramp: about 14 degrees — comfortable
Length matters here because of breakover: with a 48-inch ground-contact footprint and 8 inches at the axle, a short steep ramp meeting a tailgate puts a sharp apex exactly where the axle passes over it. Longer ramp, shallower angle, no high-centering.
Hitch carriers
A standard cargo basket doesn't work, and the reasons are width and weight rather than length: basket platforms typically run 18 to 20 inches wide against a 31-inch machine, and their ratings leave no margin for 330 pounds on a lever arm.
What works is a full-size scooter or wheelchair-style carrier with a tilting deck — roughly a 60-by-32-inch platform, a 500-pound rating, a long slide-out ramp, and a deck that tilts on a central fulcrum so a low machine loads without high-centering. The 48-inch footprint sits well inside that deck.
Check two numbers on your own vehicle first. Tongue load: an aluminum carrier at roughly 100 pounds plus 330 pounds of machine puts about 435 pounds on the receiver — never exceed the lower of your vehicle's and your hitch's tongue-weight rating, and expect an SUV to sag. Hitch height: 12 to 13 inches of hitch-to-ground clearance, or a riser.
Tires change the width
The 31-inch figure is stock tires. Change the tires and every clearance above moves:

Two consequences. Tire choice can disqualify a route: if your bottleneck is a 34-inch gate, the stock set clears it and the turf set doesn't — pick the tire for the terrain first, then re-run your clearances. And transport on stock tires, since mud/snow at 34 inches and turf at 36.5 both overhang a 32-inch carrier deck. Turf is a flat, sensitive-turf tire; for hills and loose ground, mud/snow is the right call.
Round openings: the culvert question
We get asked about culverts often enough to publish the geometry. For a round opening, the minimum inside diameter just to clear the machine is the diagonal: ID ≥ √(width² + height²). At 31 inches wide and 51 to the handlebar, that's about 60 inches of inside diameter before it even fits inside the circle.
Clearing isn't driving, though. On a curved floor a 31-inch stance rides up both walls — in a 42-inch pipe the tires sit 6.8 inches up a 47.6-degree slope, wedged on their sidewalls with no traction and no way to self-recover. For the tires to land close to flat, figure roughly 7.5 feet of inside diameter at a 20-degree side slope. And to close the obvious workaround: never cut or shorten the steering stem. It carries the steering arm down to the front wheel assembly, so modifying it voids the warranty.
The five-minute fit check
Take a tape measure and walk the actual route before you order anything.
- Find your narrowest point — gate, doorway, gap between structures — and measure the real opening, gate fully open, against 33 inches.
- Check the tire you plan to order against the table above, and re-measure if it isn't stock.
- Look up. Anything below 54 inches on the route is a problem.
- Look down. Water bars, roots, curbs, and rut edges against 8 inches of axle clearance.
- Walk the corners. An 11-foot turning radius needs room, or a back-and-fill.
- If you're hauling it, check bed length against 66 inches, ramp length against a 15-degree target, and hitch rating against about 435 pounds.
If a number comes out marginal, say so when you call. That's a better conversation before an order than after freight.
